Cultural Events in Nimbin

Nimbin Happy High Herbs

Nimbin is a town with a very low bordeom threshold! For the lucky traveller to the town – this means that there is usually an outstanding or just plain outrageous cultural or educational event being staged here. And all just a short walk away from your accomodation in Nimbin Grey Gum Lodge. Annual events in Nimbin include :

1st weekend in May – Nimbin parties for 3 days while advocating for Hemp Law Reform.  This unique festival sees our small village host 10,000 visitors – and no-one hosts a party quite like Nimbin does!

From the famous ‘Kombi Konvoy’ to the ‘Mind Candy’ debates at Nimbin Town Hall – ‘The Hemp Olympics’ -  The ‘Farmers Hemp Tent’ that hosts sessions covering all recent advances in Hemp Agriculture and Commerce; displays of building with Hemp fibre and the Mullaways Medical Tent which this year hosts work-shops on making tinture as well as Hash. Not to mention the ‘Pickers and Harvest Ball’, The Million Marijuana March, the Mardi Grass Market and ‘Mullers and Packers Bong Relay’!

The town is a total buzz of music, laughter and law reform. And it all culminates in the Protest Rally on Sunday Afternoon.

New Years Eve – ‘Tropical Fruits’ is one of Australias largest Gay social groups and they play host to many dances and parties in this region throughout the year – culminating in the massive New Years Eve party and Festival in Lismore-  only 20 minutes drive from Nimbin!
Other smaller dances through-out the year are staged in small country halls even closer to Nimbin.
Come and recover at Gay Owned and operated Grey Gum Lodge!

Late September at Nimbin Showground – A true farming and agricultural show with many locally produced foods and wines on display not to mention the ‘Nimbin’s Sexiest Farmer Competition’.

Its been said that unless you have appreciated poetry in your life you will never have your heart broken by the beauty of words. The Nimbin Poetry Festival is the only one of it’s kind in the world. Staged over two days in August in Nimbin’s School of Arts; contestants register from all over the world. Be there to have your heart broken!

There are numerous Mystic Fairs staged in Nimbin each year. Hosted by our own world renowned Jazmin, these fairs attract exhibitors and Psychic Practitioners from all over Australia.

From the regular weekly self-sufficiency work-shops at Blue Knob Farmers Market that cover topics as diverse as farming Alpacas,  making your own solar passive earthship or even making your own Biogas, to the Solar energy workshops held at Rainbow Power Company  and permaculture courses conducted at Djanjung Permaculture Centre there is always something to learn here in Nimbin. Nimbin rewards the curious!

In 2012 Nimbin hosted it’s first Roots Blues and Reggae Music Festival at the Nimbin Bush Theatre. But usually there is music happening somewhere in the this town that likes to dance. From Thursday to Sunday the Nimbin Hotel hosts local bands. As does the Sphinx Rock Cafe at Blue Knob. There is also free music at the Wadeville Pub and our own Blue Moon Cabarets which are staged thoughout the year in the Nimbin School of Arts.  On Friday nights Cullen street comes alive with drumming – Aboriginal – African- Carribean- Latin American. The percussion circle right on Nimbin’s own ‘Blister’ attracts local musicians, dancers and revellers every Friday night until late. Its hypnotic – and its free.

Your centrally located accomodation in Nimbin Grey Gum Lodge is entertainment central for those that want to sample the Arts Music and Festival happenings occurring regularly in this creative hub of the Rainbow Region of NSW.  And for those of you considering doing short courses at the Rainbow Power Company or Djanbung Permaculture Centre our Budget Ensuite rooms in Nimbin might just be the place to lay your head after a day of expanding it!
